Common AC Unit Malfunctions

Summer is almost here, and when the heat sets in, your air conditioner is going to have to work overtime to keep you and your family cool. AC units are among the hardest working appliances in the average home, and that means they have a tendency to break down. A little foreknowledge, however, can help you prevent an AC breakdown before it happens. Here are some of the most common reasons for an AC breakdown.

Faulty Wiring

Most AC units produce some vibration, and hard working parts require internal electrical components and wiring to be well secured. Faulty wiring is a likely cause many AC breakdowns. This can also cause the circuit breaker to flip more often than it should.

Insufficient Refrigerant

Your AC unit needs refrigerant in order to produce cool air- as do your refrigerator and freezer. If your AC is low on refrigerant, it will not perform up to peak levels- and you will probably turn it up to make it work harder if you don’t recognize the problem. Refrigerant leaks can cause a lot of problems, including environmental problems that you don’t want to deal with. So it’s important to make sure your refrigerant tank is full and that it does not leak.

Broken Fan

The outdoor fan pumps warm air out of your home. If it doesn’t work- your AC unit won’t be able to do its job effectively. A broken fan can also cause damage to your AC unit’s compressor. This is easy to check by listening during operation. If it’s not running, you should call a professional.

Broken Outdoor Unit

The outdoor fan will also not work if the outdoor unit isn’t doing its job. An outdoor unit malfunctioning is usually due to insufficient power, or a faulty thermostat.

Frozen Coil

If you have a frozen coil, there’s probably not enough airflow. This probably means that it’s time to clean your air filters and/or ducts.
