Why Is My AC Always Running ?

The onset of the summer season brings with not only the sunshine, but intense heat that makes you grateful for a working HVAC system. When the goal is to achieve optimal coolness in your home, it can be puzzling when you discover the A/C unit is constantly running even after a comfortable temperature is achieved. A unit that runs constantly is definitely a sign of a problem and requires attention not only to correct any problems but to prevent an increase in energy costs. Let’s take a closer look at several of the most common reasons why an air conditioner may be running nonstop.

Leaky ductwork — homes with ductwork that is aging and has not been well maintained can cause cold air intended to travel to various rooms of a home to be disrupted due to leaks. This causes the system to run on a continual basis to reach the set temperature, which causes higher energy bills and places a strain on parts and equipment.

Dirty coils — debris, dust and dirt that accumulates over time can create dirty coils which can cause the HVAC system to work harder to remove humidity and warmth from the home. It’s important to have annual tune-ups performed every year to keep the unit, coils, and components cleaned and well maintained.

Dirty/clogged air filters — debris and dirt that accumulates on air filters that are not regularly replaced restricts airflow over the coils. The unit is forced to work harder to remove humidity and properly cool the air, making the unit run on a constant basis.

While some of the issues above can be handled on your own, if your system continues to run constantly, contact a professional HVAC technician to request a tune-up to ensure your unit functions properly to keep your home cool and prevent the energy bill from soaring like the summer heat.
